What do you mean - What is a Cheese Curd?

Okay Mr. Fab - I guess this must be a midwest thing…..

“A cheese curd is an orangish cheese byproduct that feels like Silly Putty but tastes a lot better. It was invented accidentally by UW cheese scientists attempting to create an object of pure cholesterol that would still squeak. Rats who are fed this remarkable food develop an unusual capacity to polka and drink beer.” — author unknown

But seriously, folks, cheese curds are fresh, young cheddar cheese in the natural, random shape and form before being processed into blocks and aged. (Cheddar cheese is typically aged from 60 days to 4 years before being sold.) Unlike the aged variety, curds lose their desirable qualities if refrigerated or not eaten for a few days (the squeak disappears and they turn dry and salty). This means that even if you can find them in ordinary supermarkets, they are probably a few weeks old, and inedible or at least unremarkable.

So now you know - and the best place in the world to get Cheese Curds? Is from a Creamry in Wisconsin (No, I do not live in the land of the cheese heads, I am not a Packer fan either)… and yes I will travel a few hours to get some fresh, yummy, squeaky cheese curds…if they don’t squeak - baby you are just eating regular cheddar cheese…. (and I do not like them deep fried - that’s called cheese balls and you can get those anywhere….)

    Hey,

My dad went to Wisconsin (sp?) one time and brought back curds and chocolate cheese, it was good-even thought I have never heard of Chocolate Cheese before. I love Tink’s comment about my hallway, my brother would give her a giant high 5. My parents houses have always had all white walls with a couple of pictures, maybe thats why I am the way I am!

Oh Geez……..cheese curds are a joke in our house because DF eats them like crack. I buy him one bag a week and they are gone within hours. We have a brand at the store called “Squeaks” and you would swear he is 12 years old walking around and saying “Listen! They squeak!”

There are places that claim to sell cheese curd here in MO, but they don’t squeak, and they just taste like very blah lumps of cheddar, or more like American. I don’t waste my money on them.

MMM, cheese curds. I had never heard of them until I went to Wisconsin and all the cheeseheads at the home office there asked me if I had stopped to get cheese curds. That was 8 years ago, I didn’t actually try them until last year.

You can order them online from some cheese place in Milwaukee and they fedex them to you.

Oh yeah, and the packers suck.
