The roof the roof is on fire

Nothing interesting ever happens in my world…. or at least not much blog worthy!   The weather has been a little crazy lately, had a tornado or two north of here last night, and have been under thunderstorm warnings and watches for the last 24 hours, tonight we are expected to have some awesome storms as well.    Today at work the sky turned green, wind was strong and then it was just still.  A co-worker mentioned that the flags weren’t moving, and another co-worker and I went to the front doors to look at the sky and see what was going on.

And in a matter of seconds I learned:

1) Lightning is pink, not white.

2) The brightness of the flash will make  your eyes hurt.

3) When standing in a glass silo – you think you can feel it, but maybe that was just me being slightly freaked out.

4) The response time of the volunteer fire department in our community is awesome!

My co-worker and I both looked at each other at the same time and said – “SHITE!”…

She called the fire dept, I called the owner of the building.   Then I took the key – and met the fire chief at the door.

Being the chicken that I am, I didn’t enter the building, there’s something to be said about a person who can enter a building that may or may not be on fire… I am not that person.  Not when I know it’s empty – if my kids were in there  – that would be a different story.

I work in a big wooden structure.  Why the lightning didn’t hit us, I’ll never know, if it had, there would have been serious damage, and it would have gone up like kindling.  Instead it hit the movie theater (concrete building, with rubber roof, and a metal overlay) on the other side of the parking lot.  (about the length of a football field).  And wow, what a bright light, and sparks, and smoke.  The rain quickly put out the flames on the roof.    Luckily there was no fire inside, only a hole the size of a grapefruit on the roof, by noon they had a repair crew there to fix the hole and called in an electrician to double check the wiring.  You can see the scorch marks going down the side of the building, had the city inspector there and were open in time for the 4:45 show!

If I was a good blogger, you’d have pictures, but since I suck, no pictures – sorry!

I think if no one is in the building, there is no need to go in. I am glad the lightning didn’t hit you, that’s for sure!

What you felt was the thunder. And yes, it shakes the ground many times here in NC. We have had cows and trees struck many a time. It is so bad here, that when it starts, we unplug all of the electronics. We have had three microwaves hit, and once our phone flew off of the wall, leaving a huge black smudge where it had been hanging.

You did a good job getting a hold of the Fire Chief so quickly. Sad to say, but so many folks just watch things burn for awhile before they remember to call the fire department… and yeah! wish you would have taken some pictures!
